Family Promise helps homeless families with children stabilize their lives by accessing the resources necessary to acquire safe, affordable housing. The network coordinates faith-based congregations to provide food and shelter to families for one week at a time. At our day center, we offer intensive case management services that develop family case plans which guide them through the process of achieving independence.
Families also participate in our New Beginnings financial education program learning how to budget, spend smartly, and plan for unexpected expenses. These skills prepare them for housing. In partnership with Grace Episcopal Church, our Sunshine Houses provide a home for guests as they start work, pay off debt, and become fiscally stable while continuing case management services with us.

Salkehatchie Summer Service is a pioneering servant ministry at selected sites in South Carolina involving high school age and college age youth, adult community leaders, and persons of different cultures. They serve in upgrading housing and motivating community cooperative efforts by helping people to help themselves, while providing all participants with opportunities for personal growth and service.
Salkehatchie Summer Service is a program of the South Carolina Conference Board of Global Ministries.
The minimum age for participation in Salkehatchie is 14 years of age by at the beginning of the chosen camp. Camp lists are usually available by the end of January each year. Camps are held across the state usually beginning the first week in July. There are multiple camps during each week of the summer. These camps can vary in size from 35 workers to more than 175 workers. Campers may be housed in schools, churches, or summer camp facilities.
Although Salkehatchie Summer Service is a youth-oriented mission opportunity, participation by adults is essential to the success of the mission. Experience in construction, plumbing, or electrical work is always welcomed, but a willing spirit is invaluable. If one can't participate physically, other means of supports such as donation of materials, monetary donations, and especially prayers are appreciated.

Meet our new Children's Director!
It is with great joy the SPPRC announces the hiring of Merebeth Adams as Zion UMC Children’s Director. Merebeth is married to Alan Adams and is the mother of Averi and Lakin. She is a dedicated educator who wants to continue her goals of teaching about God’s love, creating valuable relationships, building confidence in young adults and children, and working to shape future community leaders through this leadership position at Zion.
She brings with her three main goals:
1) Establish a strong Sunday School and Children’s Church curriculum along with our teachers.
2) Establish a monthly Activity for our Children during the week where they can learn about Jesus and spend time growing spiritually with their peers.
3) Increase the Children’s "footprint" within our church to include service projects, providing bracelets or bulletin inserts of their artwork or Bible verses for our congregation.
We believe Merebeth will join the teachers in creatively leading our children in spiritual growth. Please offer Merebeth your love and support as she takes on this new role in our church.

Teddy Bears
Beginning November 24 and ending on December 15, Zion’s pews will be shared with lots of soft, cuddly bears. The bears are hugged, loved, blessed, and then given away to those who may need a little extra comfort in their lives. This year bears will be delivered to the Forks Rescue Squad in Townville, the Zion Fire Department, Brookdale Assisted Living and Skilled Care and the American Red Cross. Because we have so much to share, we need to show how much we care. Thank you for sharing your concern for others. Any questions, contact Cheryl Carlisle.

ART CLASS

For several years Derrial Walling has been teaching an art class at Zion. The class, composed of about 12 students, meets seasonally on Tuesday mornings from 9:00until10:45. They are learning and practicing acrylic painting and they are also discovering great talent and having a wonderful time together! Many describe it as some of the best time of the week, a time to forget all the stresses and pressures of daily living and focus on creating.
In addition, each season they adopt a mission project. This season during Lent they gathered various needed items for donation to Family Promise and Clean Start.
The next class begins in September.

It all started with a rock… One of our member's cousin has painted a rock from the shores of the Sea of Galilee for us to use in a prayer ministry. As a reminder of the supportive prayers of our church family, we can now offer this prayer rock for you to hold in the palm of your hand as you pray. Whenever there is need—loss, illness, hardship, discernment, comfort—Patti Monnen will ensure you have this tangible reminder of God’s love and ours. Patti will also be responsible for picking it up so that it can be shared with someone else. Questions? Please ask Pastor Beverly or Patti.
Want to be happier? Research shows that singing in a choir makes you happier and improves wellbeing. We have a seat for you in the Zion Choir. There are no prerequisites, you don’t have to read music, and we offer a flexible schedule averaging about every other week. In addition, you will enjoy a fabulous community and excellent leadership. What could be better? See Dennis Adams!

FAMILY PROMISE BOWL-A-THON
Graham, Stone, Barrett, and Kos, also known as the Zion Pin Crushers, had a FUN afternoon bowling for a great cause... Family Promise of Anderson County. Because of the generous donations of the congregation and friends, the Zion bowling team was able to raise $1300 to help homeless families in our area. Awesome! Zion is so thankful for these young people that are willing to help others, and for a congregation that supports outreach ministries.

Zion United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (or “ZUMVIM” as it is better known) was formed to help those in our own church and nearby community, who cannot do the work themselves or do not have the financial resources, with minor home repairs, yard work, splitting wood for home heating, driving folks to doctor appointments, and any other work that we can help to those needing assistance. ZUMVIM also serves as a liaison between Zion United Methodist Church and United Methodist mission groups such as Anderson District Volunteers in Mission (ADVIM), United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM), United Methodist Council on Relief (UMCOR), and UMVIM Early Response Teams (UMVIM ERT). This includes keeping Zion members informed on mission opportunities due to hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters, through these various agencies and facilitating member participation in those activities. Our members are also a primary resource for Emmanuel’s Hammer, whose mission is to share the love of Christ by rebuilding homes and lives in the Southeast United States. In 2018, ZUMVIM was involved in over 20 projects, accounting for over 1400 manhours. Our most recent projects included building 2 wheelchair ramps for church members after their surgery and driving a church member Monday through Friday for over a month for his radiation treatments. We do all this for our love of Christ and our commitment to help make people’s lives better.

YOUTH SKI TRIP REVIEW
The Zion Youth Group went on a Ski Trip to Winterplace in Ghent, WV February 14th - 18th. I've been on a lot of trips with these kids, but this one was probably my favorite! Most of us had never been skiing before and it showed. However, these kids refused to quit and continued to get up fall after fall, encouraging each other to keep trying. By the end of the weekend, everyone was enjoying themselves on the slopes and the group was CLOSER THAN EVER! Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible and my amazing Youth just for being who you are. God is good!

- Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, the time of reflection and repentance leading up to Easter. On this day, we acknowledge our sinfulness and commit to re-align our lives so that we are following the example of Jesus, becoming more like Christ every day. Ashes are placed on our foreheads with our confession that we aren’t perfect and our acknowledgement that death is part of life. We all know that life is short, and God calls us to live it to the fullest. One more thing, this life of faith centers in love and the hope that springs from it. So, anticipating resurrection, the ashes are formed in the sign of the cross, a reminder that we know the One who defeated death and the One who offers us life eternal. Thanks be to God! Our service will be February 14 @ 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. |
- Shrove Tuesday Pancakes
February 13 @ 5:30 p.m. in the Christian Life Center. A “Becky Board” is in the CLC with needed items. Any questions? Call Joan Anthony 940-1726 Shrove Tuesday is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. The word "shrove" comes from the word shrive, meaning “to confess”. Many call this day “Fat Tuesday,” referring to the practice of eating rich, fatty foods before the fasting of the Lenten season. Pancakes have long been associated with Shrove Tuesday because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. So what better way for us to celebrate God’s blessings on this day than with a big stack of pancakes and dessert of course! Come join us! |
-Longest Night Worship
Is the Christmas season a difficult time for you? On Thursday December 21, we are offering a quiet, simple service at 6:00 p.m. This service offers time to reflect and remember. Many people experience pain and sadness during this season. This service intends to encourage hope. All are welcome to come and share and please invite your friends or neighbors to join us. |

Did you know that Easter for Christians is not just one day? It’s a whole season! This year, we look forward to celebrating Pentecost Sunday on June 4. All the days in between, we’ll be focusing on what it means to be a follower of Christ.
